Australia beat India by 6 wickets to win World Cup 2023. This is sixth world cup title for  Australia. Opener Travis Head hit a magnificent century and scripted the six-wicket victory at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad.

Australia  won the toss and put  India to bat. Shubman Gill could score only four runs and departed as first loss to India making the score 30-1. Captain Rohit Sharma smashed three sixes and four boundaries in his knock of 47 off 31 balls. Head took a stunning catch while running back from cover point to cut short Rohit’s innings off spinner Maxwell. Virat Kohli brought up his ninth 50-plus knock in 11 innings but departed after chopping a Cummins delivery on to his stumps. India slumped to 81-3 in the 11th over when Cummins dismissed Shreyas Iyer caught behind. Jadeja made 9 or 22 balls and was caught by Josh Inglis.  K L Rahul stayed for long and made 66 of 107 balls after being caught by Josh Inglis. Suryakumar Yadav also failed to make any impact and could score 18 runs only. Team India were all out for 240 in 50 overs. Australia wicketkeeper Josh Inglis took five catches, which is a record in a World Cup final.

India hit back when Mohammed Shami shared the new ball with Jasprit Bumrah and struck on his second delivery to get David Warner caught behind for seven. Australia slumped to 47-3 seven overs into what had looked like a straight-forward chase for them. But then, Travis Head hammered  137 off 120 balls supported well by Marnus Labuschagne, who made 58 not out, in a 192-run stand to kill off the contest. Australia  made 241 in 43 over for 4 wickets to win the final. For India, Jasprit Bumrah took two wickets while Mohammad Shami and Siraj took one wicket each.

Over one lakh fans watching the match at the Narendra Modi Stadium and millions across the country were left crying hugely disappointed after team India’s tragic loss. PM Narendra Modi attended the Cricket World Cup final in Ahmedabad. He had a message for Indian cricket team after the loss. “Dear Team India, Your talent and determination through the World Cup was noteworthy. You’ve played with great spirit and brought immense pride to the nation. We stand with you today and always.”

 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with Australian Deputy PM Richard Marles handed over the glittering ODI World Cup 2023 trophy to Australian skipper Pat Cummins.

Rahul Dravid, India head coach while speaking to the media admitted that the dressing room was an emotional wreck given the months of hard work they have put forth to get to this position of standing so close to breaking the nation’s 10-year drought of an ICC trophy. He said, “Yeah, of course, he’s (Rohit Sharma) disappointed, as are many boys in the dressing room. It wasn’t, yeah, there were a lot of emotions in that dressing room. It was tough to see as a coach, because I know how hard these guys have worked, what they’ve put in, the sacrifices they’ve made. So, it’s tough. I mean, it’s tough to see that as a coach, because you get to know these boys personally. You get to see the effort they put in, the hard work that we’ve put in over the last month, the kind of cricket we’ve played. But yeah, but that’s sport.”
